Maja hangs up her boots

Dziękujemy za osiem wspaniałych lat, powodzenia, i do zobaczenia!

Maja Znamirowska, the first player to score 100 goals for The Pride, confirmed her retirement at the 1st teams’ end of season social on Friday night.

Her last appearance for The Pride was in the Derbyshire FA Women’s Plate Final in April 2024 in which she ruptured her achilles tendon.

Having previously played in her native Poland for Checz Gdynia, Znamirowska joined Pride Park after moving to England, making her debut on 3rd April 2016 against Ashbourne. In that game Maja came off the bench to score 2 goals and demonstrate searing pace that would go on to terrorise defenders throughout the League. She went on to score 110 goals in her 8 years and 102 appearances with the Pride, becoming the first Pride player to have scored a century of goals.

Maja had a purple patch in the three seasons from 2016/17 to 2018/19 when she scored over 20 goals in each season. It looked like her time with The Pride would come to an end in 2019, however, when she moved to Liverpool but, after trying a few clubs near her new home, she decided to continue to play for the Pride, even though that meant being unable to train with the team and a two hour journey each way for matches!

On her retirement, Maja said: „It’s something I’ve considered at the end of each of the last few seasons but each time I couldn’t face not playing again. However, after this injury now is the right time.”

„I feel proud to have played over 100 League and Cup games, and to have scored over 100 goals. I feel very fortunate to have done so alongside so many fantastic players, many of whom I now feel lucky to call my friends. Thank you to all my team-mates and the coaches at Pride Park, who I’ve shared some great times with and who all have a special place in my heart."

Aside from her blistering pace and goalscoring feats, Maja will be remembered as a popular player and the team’s joker, always cracking a joke, and for always playing with a smile on her face.
