Grassroots football in Derby has celebrated a major milestone with the official opening of the state-of-the-art artificial football pitch at Moorways Sports Village. While the pitch has been actively serving the community and local clubs for nearly two years, its formal launch marks a celebration of its immense success and its role in local sports development.

The cutting-edge facility was officially unveiled during a special ribbon-cutting ceremony last month, celebrating both its impact so far and its long-term future in supporting community health.

A Ribbon-Cutting for the Community
The official opening ceremony was conducted by Phil and Celia Ingall, Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayoress of Derby City Council. Speaking at the launch, the Deputy Mayor emphasised the council's commitment to encouraging active lifestyles across all generations.
The celebration brought together key stakeholders who collaborated to bring the project to life and ensure its ongoing success. Representatives in attendance included:

  • Derby City Council - the local government body responsible for managing civic services and infrastructure, which includes strategically funding and partnering with external operators to deliver state-of-the-art leisure facilities like Moorways.
  • The Football Foundation – Whose funding and strategic support remain vital to regional sports infrastructure.
  • Derbyshire FA – Dedicated to growing the game and providing sustainable environments for local teams.
  • Everyone Active – The leisure operator managing the Moorways Sports Village site.
  • Pride Park FC – One of the prominent local „partner” clubs already benefiting directly from the facility.

Elevating Grassroots Football
The artificial pitch replaced an old, sand-based surface to provide an all-weather, high-durability space. Designed to meet strict modern standards, it allows for year-round play, eliminating the frequent winter waterlogging that historically disrupted local league schedules.

James Skinner, Chair of Pride Park FC said: „For partner clubs, like Pride Park FC, the facility has already proven to offer a premium environment for both training and competitive fixtures."

Catering to everything from youth development pathways to recreational sessions, walking football, and adult leagues, the facility is perfectly geared up to host a wide range of community initiatives and is already a bustling hub for local clubs’ training.

A Complete Sports Hub
The addition of this pitch further cements Moorways Sports Village as a premier sports hub in the region. Integrating seamlessly with the £42 million water park and leisure centre alongside the historic Moorways Stadium, the complex now boasts a comprehensive lineup: the all-weather artificial pitch, grass pitches, an 8-lane floodlit athletics track, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a teaching pool, and a family water park. This is complemented by a state-of-the-art gym, fitness studios, a sauna, and a steam room.

The artificial pitch is fully open and available for bookings by local clubs, schools, and recreational groups looking to join its growing community of users.
