WOMEN'S DEVELOPMENT TEAM SURPASSES EXPECTATIONS IN FIRST SEASON

WOMEN'S DEVELOPMENT TEAM SURPASSES EXPECTATIONS IN FIRST SEASON

David Kwiatek28 May - 16:15

Our Women’s Development team have had - by any measure - a successful first season.

Our Women’s Development team have not only survived their first season, but against all the odds and expectations, have positively thrived - by any measure the season can be considered a success.

The team can trace its origins back to when Aaron and Corinne Jones started a team at u12 after their daughter had mixed experiences with various teams.

„Then, after three seasons, we made the decision to move from a club where, we were the only girls team, to Pride Park because we knew we’d find the support, inclusivity, and community we needed to continue our journey” says Corinne.

Even then, it hasn’t been easy (when is running a grassroots football team ever easy!), as the team initially struggled to get results at u15, u16 and in their first season at u18.

At the end of the team’s first season at u18, recruiting for another season at that age group didn’t appear to be a realistic proposition so, making a leap of faith, the team made the transition into open age this season. It has paid dividends as they were not only able to bring in the additional players needed, but were able to add valuable playing experience to the squad.

„We’re incredibly proud of the environment we’ve built together - a place where players can grow, build confidence, and feel part of something bigger. From day one, we never judged anyone by their ability. We welcomed players that couldn’t find teams, either after their team folded, or who had been turned away or told they weren’t good enough, that there wasn’t a place for them, or they simply couldn’t get meaningful playing time, as well as some that hadn’t played before - and some of those very players are now among the strongest, most ambitious individuals we have. It just goes to show what can be achieved with a little confidence, guidance, and support.”

The new players that have come in to the team this season have reinvigorated the squad and added an extra ingredient and it has been a really impressive first season at open age for the team. There were, inevitably, a few bumps along the way, but the squad’s determination and character showed in the end as they narrowly missed out on promotion on goal difference and made it to the quarter-finals stage in two cup competitions!

„It’s not an exaggeration to say the season has surpassed all expectations, and it’s all down to how well the group has come together; „the team spirit and chemistry are unreal, and it gives us huge confidence heading into next season.”

It’s a credit to the leadership, resilience and fortitude of Aaron and Corinne, along with the support of Andy, Dan and the players that have stuck with the team through the hard times to reap their rewards this season, as the team has repaid their faith and belief.

The team is looking for additional players to join them for next season - if you’d like to be a part of a team with a friendly, positive team environment and with an emphasis on development, register your interest here or contact Corinne on 07368 420660
