Pride caught cold but turn up heat to recover

Pride Park were pleased to have Summer Evans back from injury after a four week absence, although starting from the bench, for Sunday’s visit to Moorways of Amber Valley. Also returning, although after a longer break was Vicky Wilsoncroft for her first game since the end of last season.

Two shots on goal and two goals in the first 11 minutes got Amber Valley off to a flying start as they caught Pride Park cold. The first goal came after 8 minutes when a simple ball threaded through Pride’s back line was met by the left winger and although Jade Howell in the Pride goal got a hand to it, she couldn’t keep it out [0-1].

Three minutes later Pride were slow to deal with a clearance, an attempted pass was blocked and Pride were opened up by a pass down the line for the left winger who cut inside and played an angled pass to the striker to run on to - she beat Jade Howell to the ball and slotted into an empty net.[0-2]

Pride Park had already had two efforts off target at that stage, and with the game hardly started the next goal was likely to be critical.

Pride’s Millie Holmes went close when she turned inside the defender but her shot came back off the crossbar and was cleared.

Sophie Ayton limped off with only 17 minutes played with the recurrence of an ankle injury and was replaced by Vicky Wilsoncroft at centre back.

Beth Jones had a couple of efforts wide of the post before, after 19 minutes, the deficit was reduced. Rachel Weaver passed forward to Ella Kew and she turned and clipped the ball into the channel for Beth Jones, who took the ball round the keeper and slotted home from an angle.

Amber Valley went close on the half hour when a driven free kick from 35 yards was heading for the top corner until Jade Howell pushed it over the crossbar and had another chance after a run down their left and cut inside for a shot that drifted wide of the far post.

Summer Evan’s glancing header from a corner hit the outside of the post, and Pride had an excellent chance to draw level after a corner when the ball fell to Beth Jones in the centre of goal and 6 yards out but she lifted her shot over the crossbar. As the half ended Pride went close again when Ella Kew’s forward ball turned the Amber Valley defence and Beth Jones reached the ball first, high on the bounce, but although she lifted it over the onrushing keeper, her lob dropped on to the roof of the net.

It was beginning to have the feel of “one of those days” for Pride, who were creating chances but unable to apply the finishing touch.

HT 1-2

Both sides had a chance apiece in the opening quarter hour of the second half but without testing the keepers but the momentum of the game swung on the hour as Pride scored two goals in two minutes.

The first came from a move down the left - Rachel Weaver, Tash Allderidge and Ella Kew combining to find Beth Jones, under pressure from a defender she played the ball across the six yard box to Summer Evans, who returned the ball to Jones and she found the gap between the post and defender on the line for a well taken goal to draw the sides level. [2-2]

Two minutes later Tash Allderidge’s corner was returned to her, and her controlled shot went over the keeper and under the bar to give Pride the lead for the first time. [3-2]

Amber Valley responded to going behind and won a series of corners but without having a sight of goal. However, Pride were pushing for more - Beth Jones’ half-volley went just wide, and Ella Kew’s header from a corner cleared the crossbar.

With just under twenty minutes to play, Summer Evans headed an Amber Valley goal-kick to Beth Jones and despite close attention from defenders she lobbed the keeper from inside the ‘D’ [4-2].

As the end of normal time approached Jade Howell dived to smother a low cross pulled back from the bye line, and Amber Valley’s left winger cut inside again but her shot was pulled wide. Pride extended their lead on 89 minutes when Tash Allderidge’s corner was helped on and over the keeper by a defender at the near post [5-2].

There had been a couple of stoppages resulting in six minutes of added time, in which Amber Valley had a late push with two shots from outside the area, both comfortably held by Jade Howell.

After being caught cold at the start, Pride responded well and showed character to come back from 0-2 to score 5 without reply. It wasn’t a “peak” Pride performance, but it was one of those days when a result had to be ground out.

Sunday’s game brings an end to a run of home fixtures as Pride Park make the short journey to Borrowash Victoria next Sunday (kick off 1.30pm).
