Pride lose out to late goal

The second game of Sunday’s asymmetrical double header to conclude the season was against Buxton Women.

Having already played 60 minutes and up against a fresh opponent, The Pride were at a distinct disadvantage in the second game, particularly in the latter stages but, fortunately, there was nothing at stake in terms of league standings, as The Pride secured runners up spot a week ago.

Buxton fashioned an opportunity within a minute of kick off, but the shot was hit wide, as Pride took a little while to get going again. They soon started to play, however, and created a string of opportunities, but found the Buxton keeper in fine form - acting as sweeper keeper and taking the ball off the toe of a Pride attacker on several occasions and making two exceptional saves.

The first of these, after 11 minutes, came when the keeper was out quickly to clear, but on this occasion the ball fell to Aimee Healy-Raynor who tried to lift the ball over the keeper, but she just a got a hand to it to turn it away.

The best save came after 24 minutes, when Beth Jones was played in by Steph Eadon, turned inside the defender and her left foot shot was curling inside the far top corner - but the keeper somehow got a hand to it at full stretch to turn it round the post.

Just before half-time Buxton went close when they broke through and the attacker’s shot beat Jodie Hill but came back off the post and was cleared.

Pride had the better of the chances and, but for some fine goalkeeping, would have been ahead but at half-time it remained goalless.

The second half followed a similar pattern. Both teams were trying to play progressively, Pride creating chances, but being foiled by the goalkeeper. After 44 minutes Libby Queen played Ellie Coleman in and she took on Buxton’s defender, who was tempted to put a foot in and brought Ellie down on the edge of the area, earning a yellow card. Tash Allderidge’s free kick was blocked by the defensive wall.

Ellie Coleman, Tash Allderidge and Beth Jones all had chances saved, before Buxton’s only shot on target settled the game with 2 minutes to play. The goal was more than a little fortuitous, as a deflection and a ricochet presented the ball to Buxton’s attacker - who was offside and active both when the ball was deflected and from the ricochet - and her scooped shot looped up and over Jodie Hill. In fairness to the officials nobody spotted it at the time, it was only apparent from the film of the game. Fortunately, the teams’ League standings weren’t at stake as Pride and Buxton were already confirmed in 2nd and 3rd respectively.

There was just time for Ellie Coleman to try to salvage a point, but her shot was saved and so Buxton completed a League double over The Pride.

Although unable to end the season with a win, by any measure it’s been a successful season for The Pride, showing progression on all the key measures and finishing on the podium in all three competitions entered (excluding The Women’s FA Cup) - finishing as League runners up, DGLL Challenge Cup winners and runners up in the Derbyshire FA Women’s Plate Final.

The players were presented with their runners-up trophies after the games by one of the team’s sponsors, Andy Jones of Topmark Joinery.
