It was always going to be to be a challenging assignment against a team that were playing two leagues higher only last season, and it took time for Pride Park to settle as NTU enjoyed good possession early on.
NTU won a series of corners but Pride defended them well and gradually started to come into the game; almost taking the lead when Otty Baker hit a terrific shot from 20yards that was heading for the top corner but, somehow, the goalkeeper got across and matched the quality of the strike with an exceptional fingertip save.
Pride had done well to limit NTU chances but two goals in quick succession scored after 24 and 26 minutes knocked the wind out of the home team’s sails for a while. Both goals were disappointing goals to concede (but then, aren’t they all?!), nevertheless, Pride managed to get to half-time without any further goals conceded.
Needing to find a way back into the game, Pride Park made some tactical adjustments at half-time -a difficult balance between remaining secure and offering more threat to try and overcome a two goal deficit.
The Pride had a good spell of around 20 minutes, creating chances and testing NTU’s ‚keeper, but she continued to be equal to the challenge, making some good saves, particularly from Beth Jones - which proved the difference as two further goals for NTU on 67’ and 71’ put the tie beyond the Pride.
However, Pride Park did win a penalty with three minutes left to play when Daisy Bowen was pushed from behind; Tash Collyer converting from the spot.
Pride Park gave it a good go and, but for some good saves by the NTU keeper it was closer than the scoreline suggests … but the better side won and we wish NTU good luck in the next round.
Player of the Match for The Pride was Tash Collyer who lead by example, never stopping in a performance full of energy, grit and determination.
Pride get the League campaign underway next Sunday (14th) with a trip to Wirksworth (ko 1.30pm).
