MATCH REPORT | PRIDE PARK 2-6 BASFORD UTD

Doug Outt

Grit and early promise give way to fatigue as depleted Pride Park's 26-game unbeaten run comes to an end.

Pride Park faced a daunting challenge with a severely depleted squad of just 12 players for yesterday's East Midlands Women's Regional League Division 1 fixture—including three playing despite being under the weather and only a single recognised forward available. Despite these handicaps forcing a slight tactical reshuffle, Pride Park showed genuine attacking threat and grit, holding Basford United to a 1-1 draw at halftime.

However, as fatigue set in during the second period with no fresh legs on the bench to inject energy, Basford’s midfield control and superior numbers eventually took over. The visitors capitalised on a decisive second-half spell to secure a 6-2 victory.

Pride Park started brightly, pressing high and looking to unleash their front line quickly. In the 10th minute, Beth Jones nearly caught out the Basford goalkeeper from 20 yards after a slip, but the shot drifted just over. Moments later, Tash Collyer shot over from inside the box, followed by Jones pulling another wide after good link-up play involving Megan Nowak and Ellie-Mae Coleman.

In the 16th minute, Pride Park almost scored a goal-of-the-season contender when Tash Collyer found Beth Jones 15 yards inside the pride half, and after driving forward with the ball and spotting the goalkeeper off her line, she launched an audacious 50-yard effort from just inside her own half, forcing a scrambling save behind for a corner.

Pride Park capitalised on the resulting delivery in the 17th minute: Tash Collyer’s corner into the six-yard box led to a chaotic scramble, Jas Sanghera’s header was blocked, and after a scramble on the goal line, Eliot Sayavong stabbed the ball home to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Pride Park continued to threaten, though a promising attack was thwarted by a questionable offside against Beth Jones when she appeared to be a good two yards onside.

Basford drew level in the 42nd minute through a direct free-kick from 30 yards out, beating the wall to find the near post. A late spell of sustained pressure from Basford before the break was well defended, leaving the sides tied 1-1 at halftime.

Pride Park immediately created an opportunity after the restart when Beth Jones beat three defenders on the right touchline and whipped in a cross, but Tash C’ollyer’s far-post header went just the wrong side of the post.

As the half wore on, the physical toll of playing with a depleted squad became evident. Basford were enjoying a greater share of possession than in the first half and Pride Park began defending deeper, stretching the space between the midfield and Beth Jones up front, though Tash Collyer worked tirelessly to maintain the link. Jade Howell was forced into a couple of saves and claims in goal, while Sophie Ayton made a critical far-post block on 55 minutes.

Another promising Pride Park attack was stopped in its tracks by a questionable offside flag - with one, possibly two defenders sitting deeper than Beth Jones when the ball was played. Although the momentum had been building this proved to be the game’s turning point as, from the ensuing free kick Basford scored the first of three rapid goals (two from defensive slips, and a long-range effort) against a visibly tiring Pride Park defence. Basford added two further goals - after a turnover on half way and another shot from distance. Basford made it six with five minutes to play when a missed clearance inside the penalty area presented the Basford attacker with the simplest of tap ins.

Despite the match slipping away, the Pride kept fighting. In the 89th minute, Jas Sanghera provided a through ball for Beth Jones to pull a goal back with a fine finish to make it 2-6.

Beth Jones was named opposition Player of the Match: Pride Park’s primary attacking outlet throughout the match, Jones worked tirelessly up front under difficult conditions, frequently isolated against multiple defenders. Tash Collyer was named Pride’s Player of the Match; putting in a prodigious work rate, bridging the gap between midfield and attack.

While a heavy 6-2 defeat at the hands of a clinical Basford side brought a remarkable 26-game unbeaten league run to an end, there were clear positives to take from a performance packed with early grit and genuine attacking threat. Pride Park held their own for long spells, but with a depleted squad offering just 12 available players—several carrying knocks—fatigue inevitably took its toll as the visitors' superior numbers and midfield dominance told in the second half.

Having only 12 players available this early in the campaign, before winter injuries and scheduling pressures build, is an obvious concern, yet four points from the opening three matches represents a respectable foundation in a higher division. Pride now head into a timely two-week break following a fixture reshuffle and a cup bye, returning to action on October 18th when they face Borrowash Youth in the Derbyshire Women’s County Cup First Round.
