United & Resilient

Andrew Hobson9 Feb - 16:41

Our U15s put in a resilient team performance to fight back and secure the win

A win for PPFC would secure at least second place in the Autumn League, but under wet and drizzly conditions the team made a slow start. The opening minutes saw PPFC struggling to retain possession and coming under sustained pressure and play in our own half. That pressure told on 10 minutes, as Belper struck early to put PPFC 1-0 down for the first time this season.

However, just two minutes later, PPFC responded exactly when needed. Aoife found Isla on the edge of the box, and a composed shot into the top right levelled the score at 1–1, restoring calm and confidence to PPFC’s play. A frantic spell followed, with both sides trading possession, but as the half progressed PPFC settled into the game.

In the 29th minute, PPFC took the lead. Cutting in from the right, Yumi’s shot was parried into the six-yard box, where Verity reacted quickest to pounce and finish clinically, making it 1-2. With the advantage secured, PPFC saw out the remainder of the half creating chances and only narrowly missing out scoring again.

The first half highlighted the need for a tactical adjustment, particularly in midfield, to counter Belper’s pressure and their use of balls over the top towards our defensive line. The coaches responded by reverting to a system with two defensive midfielders. This change allowed PPFC to retain more possession and improved the overall flow of the attacking play, creating good chances. It also provided better support for the defence and helped limit threats from Belper.

As the game moved into its final stages, PPFC controlled possession, with much of the play coming through the attacking wingers and midfielders, who were now able to win, keep, and distribute the ball effectively. The decisive moment came in the 80th minute, when a corner from Emily forced a Belper own goal, sealing the victory for PPFC.

Injuries and the physical nature of the contest demanded resilience throughout, particularly from the defensive unit of Betsy, Violet, Lille-Rose, Polly, Emily, Ruby, Aoife, Eloise and Fliss. Both the regular defenders and those who stepped into supporting roles showed excellent teamwork and adaptability.

Player of the Match was awarded to Anya for creating some great attacking play from midfield - in this match and across the past few weeks - playing in our forward players with imaginative and well timed balls.
